New York mayor hypes up the Gay Games

Athletes from 40 countries are expected to compete in Gay Games IV to be held in various arenas around New York City next June. And Mayor David Dinkins expects the Games to draw 15,000 athletes from all over the world.

At a City Hall news conference July 28, Dinkins said the athletes and nearly 500,000

The games started in San Francisco in 1982, were held there again in 1986 and in Vancouver in 1990. The 1994 schedule was arranged to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Stonewall rally being held in New York City on Sunday, June 26.

spectators should generate $100 million in Summit bowling begins

economic activity in the city.

"But," Dinkins said, "perhaps more important than the economic contribution the games will make is the message they bring a message of tolerance, respect, understanding and openness among all people."

The games will be open to all regardless of sexual orientation, HIV status, physical disability, nationality or religious belief.

"The only requirements for participation in the Games are that a love for sports and a respect for the differences and choices of others abound in each event," Dinkins said.

Jay Hill, executive director of the Games, said that for the first time they will include same sex pairs figure skating.

The Games will be held from June 18-25 and feature 700 tennis competitors at the National Tennis Center and more than 1,200 competitors in water events at the new Asphalt Green aquatic center in Manhattan.

Other events will be cycling in Central Park, softball at Randalls Island, flag football in Prospect Park in Brooklyn, golf at Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx, figure skating in the Abe Stark Arena in Coney Island, martial arts at Roseland and bowling in Jersey City, N.J.

The 8th season of the Summit Bowling Association will begin on Friday, Sept. 10 at Northgate Lanes in Cuyahoga Falls.

League play begins at 9:30 pm. Any and all bowlers are welcome to join in the friendship and fun. You do not have to be a good bowler... many averages are below 100. You do not have to have a full team in order to bowl; if you need a team, they'll try to find one for you.

For more info about the league, call David at 877-3517 or Jim at 794-8872.

ACT UP

CLEVELAND

We have a plan

by Joe Carroccio

ACT UP Cleveland is joining forces with ACT UPS around the world in supporting the Barbara McClintock Project to Cure AIDS. This is a very ambitious project that is going to take the coordination and help from all of our AIDS organizations locally and nationally to make it work. Since our government won't give us a Manhattan Project, we have created our own. The major researchers and scientists who are working on AIDS have already met to discuss the project and decide the best course of action. ACT UP Cleveland has decided to make this project our major objective for the remainder of 1993. You can bet you will be hearing a lot about it.

(Nobel laureate Barbara McClintock is a research geneticist who, going against the prevailing thinking in the field, discovered a fundamental premise of DNA replication. Although her findings were shunned by her colleagues, she continued her work, which was acknowledged only after the molecule's structure was discovered by others years later. The project is named for her because her approach-intense committment and a focus on divergence rather than the normis a model for AIDS research.)

The Barbara McClintock Project would bring together a team of diverse researchers together in one central location in an area with a high incidence of AIDS. These researchers would come from a wide variety of backgrounds, from virology to nutrition and would interact regularly, for maximum creativity and "cross-pollination" of ideas.

"

The project would have two main goals: to do basic research into the pathogenesis of AIDS (how AIDS actually damages the body-no, this has not been done yet!) and to identify and develop a cure.

The project would examine all theories about the development of AIDS, not just the current NIH model, and study all affected populations.

In order to assure an honest and objective approach, the researchers would suspend all conflicts of interest for the duration of the project.

The McClintock Project would have the power of "eminent domain" to ensure that all promising approaches are pursued as quickly as possible. If a drug company refused to adhere to an approved timetable, the project would buy the patent and develop it itself.

All treatments released primarily due to the McClintock Project would be made available to everyone, regardless of their ability

to pay.

What can you do to help? First, you can give money to the project. We will be holding major fund raisers hopefully in coordination with the other organizations. If not, then we'll do it ourselves. Second, you can volunteer with ACT UP. We are going to need fundraising coordinators and volunteers to help at the events. Third, join ACT UP Cleveland in a major demonstration this fall (time and date to be announced), to bring this project to the attention of the media and public.

And for those of you who constantly ask us what we do besides demonstrate, we suggest you educate yourself about this program. It has taken considerable effort on the part of ACT UP to develop this project. Copies are available through ACT UP Cleveland, and hopefully it will put the criticism

to rest.

If ever there was a time to pull together, it's now. It may be our last chance. The decision is ultimately with you.
